Per la nostra rubrica dedicata ai libri introvabili, pubblichiamo qualche testo proveniente dal volume Inno a David e altre poesie del filosofo e poeta inglese Christopher Smart (1722-1771), pubblicato nel 1975 da Einaudi con traduzione di Margherita Guidacci.
FRAGMENT A
Rejoice in God, O ye Tongues; give the glory to the Lord, and the Lamb.
Nations, and languages, and every Creature, in which is the breath of Life.
Let man and beast appear before him, and magnify his name together.
Let Noah and his company approach the throne of Grace and do homage to the Ark of their Salvation.
Let Abraham present a Ram, and worship the God of his Redemption.
Let Isaac, the Bridegroom, kneel with his camels, and bless the hope of his pilgrimage.
Let Jacob, and his speckled Drove adore the good Shepherd of Israel.
Let Esau offer a scape Goat for his seed, and rejoice in the blessing of God his father.
Let Nimrod, the mighty hunter, bind a Leopard to the altar, and consecrate his spear to the Lord.
Let Ishmael dedicate a Tiger, and give praise for the liberty in which God has set him at large.
Let Balaam appear with an Ass, and bless the Lord his people and his creatures for a reward eternal.

Esultate in Dio, o lingue, date gloria al Signore e all’Agnello.
Nazioni, lingue, e ogni creatura in cui è un alito di vita.
Si presentino a lui l’uomo e la bestia a glorificare insieme il suo nome.
Si accostino Noè con i suoi al trono di grazia e onori l’Arca di salvezza.
Abramo presenti un ariete, e adori il Dio della sua redenzione.
Isacco, lo sposo, s’inginocchi con i suoi cammelli, e benedica la speranza del viaggio.
Giacobbe, col gregge screziato, adori il buon pastore d’Israele.
Esaú offra il capro espiatorio per la sua discendenza, e si allieti della benedizione di Dio suo padre.
Nembrot, vigoroso cacciatore, leghi un leopardo all’altare, e consacri la sua lancia al Signore.
Ismaele offra una tigre, e renda grazie per la sua libertà che il Signore gli aperse.
Balaam si presenti con l’asina, e benedica il Signore il suo popolo e le sue creature per l’eterna mercede.
